En Vacances!

En_vacances Website of the Day has gone to France and taken Miles with it. Normal service is due to be resumed on Tuesday August 13th, but in the meantime, why not explore some of the links showcased elsewhere on this site.

Every site featured on the programme over the last couple of years appears on this site and there are plenty of additional links to sites we haven’t had a chance to showcase  on-air. You can browse the archives by date or by category, search the site and post comments on any of the links you find here.

BBC iPlayer: Free legal TV downloads for UK licence fee payers.

>> BBC News: BBC web downloads set to launch
>> BBC News: What does on-demand TV offer?

>> Video from BBC News. Click here for more coverage

From tomorrow, UK licence fee payers will be able to register their interest in taking part in the first public tests of the brand-new BBC iPlayer service. iPlayer will allow viewers to catch up with around 400 hours of BBC TV shows every week by downloading them to their Windows XP computers. In the autumn the scheme will be expanded to Apple Macs, with support for Windows Vista and other devices to be added later.
Programmes from all BBC TV channels (including digital channels and regional programmes from BBC Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) will be available to download for up to 7 days after transmission. Once downloaded viewers have up to 30 days to start watching a programme before it is automatically deleted from their computer.
The whole system has been designed to be extremely straight-forward to use. I looked at it in action earlier today and it is even simpler than Listen Again for BBC Radio.

STOP PRESS: You can now register your interest in the iPlayer trial using the following link:

Keep an eye on this page in coming weeks for more on iPlayer.

The clickable Flood Map on the BBC News site is a good at-a-glance guide to which counties are worst affected. Click on each county on the map to get more details, pictures of that area and links to detailed news coverage
The Environment Agency site is the first place to look for flood warnings. They also offer useful downloadable fact-sheets with guidance on cleaning up after a flood, plus a searchable Flood Map which warns househunters whether a particular area is on a flood plain.
